When deploying a new service or site, selecting the right storage tier is critical. While providers often market unlimited bandwidth or hundreds of gigabytes, actual usage for most web applications is surprisingly modest. Understanding your resource requirements enables leaner hosting choices and avoids unnecessary overhead.

Here is a practical breakdown of how disk space translates to actual content.

1. The Raw Math: Text and Code

Text is exceptionally dense. A single character encoded in UTF-8 typically consumes 1 byte.

  • 1 KB (1,024 bytes) contains roughly 1,000 characters (about 150–200 words).
  • 1 MB (1,048,576 bytes) holds about 500,000 characters of formatted text—the equivalent of a 300-page book.
